Gary Winick was an independent filmmaker who was at the forefront of the movement to make movies using low-budget digital video. He was also a Hollywood director who made films like Letters to Juliet, Charlotte’s Web, and the overlooked gem 13 Going on 30 (the age-swapping romcom which earned an A- from EW critic Owen Gleiberman.) Winick passed away over the weekend due to undisclosed causes. EW caught up with 13 Going on 30 star Jennifer Garner, who talked about what it was like to work with Winick:
“Gary and I had the most successful collaboration possible,” said Garner. “I don’t mean success in terms of box office, or from anyone else’s point of view other than my own. I left it better at what I do. He was one of the most inclusive people you could ever meet, and I was energized by our creative mess together everyday. From then on, there wasn’t a single project that I didn’t try to do with him. We had scripts written together, we developed things together. It was an ongoing and unfinished collaboration. We had several ‘next’ movies that we were about to do. We just didn’t get them done quickly enough.
“I think everybody who was a friend of Gary’s considered him one of their best friends. He had a hundred best friends. He just was unafraid of being intimate. And that spilled over into his directing. His whole company, InDigEnt, was based on trying to find a way to fold everyone in, being 100 percent invested in the movie, because they were going to profit from it if the movie was successful.
“Even in a frothy romantic comedy, he found what was really human about a scene, or about a character, or about a moment. That’s not always easy or pretty. [While filming 13 Going on 30], he wasn’t afraid to bring the writer in and change the words completely and start again. So it was messy, but I loved every minute of it. I really, really loved him.”

When the weather outside is frightful, it will be Jennifer Garner – and not husband Ben Affleck – who’ll be trudging through the snow in search of Christmas gifts for family and friends.

“I’m not particularly proud of it. But it’s a bit of a ’50s thing, I guess,” Affleck, 38, tells Ellen DeGeneres of the couple’s holiday-shopping arrangements in an interview airing Wednesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“Because my wife is so capable and because I’m less so, she does a lot of that work, and I kind of root her on. I’m encouraging.” (more…)

Speculation has been swirling around the Internet that Jennifer Garner is pregnant again as evidenced by photos of her wearing loose-fitting clothes of late. Not so, her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

“Jennifer is absolutely not pregnant,” the rep says.

Garner has two daughters, Violet, 4, and Seraphina, 1, with husband Ben Affleck. She will next be seen in the comedy, Butter, which she also produced, due out in 2011.

The Greenbrier has announced a long list of celebrities who will be on hand for the grand opening of the resort’s new $80 million underground casino July 2.

Owner Jim Justice said the list includes Charleston native and actress Jennifer Garner and her husband actor Ben Affleck.

Jennifer Garner had quite the bash for her 38th birthday party on Saturday afternoon! “Jen wanted everyone to feel like they could bring their kids, so she didn’t want to have it at night,” a party-goer told RadarOnline.com . Among the guests was her “Juno” co-star Jason Bateman, with his 3-year-old daughter, Francesca; actress Reese Witherspoon; actor Tobey Maguire with his wife, Jennifer, and their 3-year-old daughter Ruby; and model Molly Sims . “Even though there were a bunch of celebs there, it didn’t feel like a Hollywood party at all,” the spy told the Web site. “It just seemed like some friends getting together to celebrate a birthday.”
