Jennifer Garner’s one of Hollywood’s most famous actresses, but that doesn’t mean she needs a lavish baby shower!

She celebrated the upcoming birth of her third child quietly at a friend’s home in the Brentwood section of LA on Feb. 1, Life & Style has learned.

“It was a lot of moms and very small,” a friend of the star tells Life & Style. “It was just a normal group her friends, but Jen was very excited to see everyone.”

And the mom of Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3, didn’t event want gifts!

“She asked that no one give her anything, but she still ended up getting a ton!” the friend adds. “She was thrilled.”

But what’s Jennifer, 39, looking most forward to? Adding to her brood with her husband of six years, Ben Affleck.

“She’s so excited,” the friend tells Life & Style.

“Having a baby fills your life in such a way that no matter what you’re doing, there’s something bigger,” Jen has said about motherhood.

The animals on “FarmVille” have come to life in an animated film starring actress Jennifer Garner.

No, social games maker Zynga Inc. isn’t going Hollywood as rumored on the Internet a couple of months ago, at least not yet.

Rather, Zynga has released an animated “FarmVille” short to promote a holiday campaign to raise money for the Save The Children organization through the sale of virtual goods within the game, like a holiday pony, a teddy bear tree or a peppermint lollipop crop.

Zynga also has holiday-themed promotions running in its other social games. Here’s one that might cause “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin to get kicked off another plane – his favorite word game “Words with Friends” has a holiday-themed board.

Zynga posted part one of “A Very FarmVille Christmas” on Friday and said part two will come out sometime before Christmas. Speaking of raising funds, Zynga officials wouldn’t comment on reports the San Francisco company is set to start selling stock next week.

Angeleno fans of John Hughes’ 1980s coming-of-age favorite “The Breakfast Club” will have the opportunity to experience the tale a little differently Thursday night.

Filmmaker Jason Reitman (“Juno,” “Up in the Air”) will direct a live reading of the screenplay for the film as part of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s new film series, helping us wonder, once again, if Barry Manilow knows that Mr. Vernon raids his wardrobe.

Mindy Kaling, Patton Oswalt, Jennifer Garner and James Van Der Beek will be on hand to play the roles originated by Ally Sheedy’s goth girl, Anthony Michael Hall’s nerd, Molly Ringwald’s popular chick and Emilio Estevez’s jock, respectively, and give new life to the story of students bonding in the detention room at Shermer High. The actors will offer their interpretations on the classic lines, while Reitman will call out directions on the stage.

Reitman told 24 Frames that he was motivated to stage the unusual event because most filmgoers don’t get a chance to see how actors arrive at their characters. “It’s exciting to see a role developed from start to finish,” Reitman said.

And “The Breakfast Club,” he noted, particularly lends itself to the format. “It’s almost a play — even characters saying these great lines. It’s easy to imagine the scenes as you listen.”

LACMA’s film program has attempted several novel initiatives under new chief Elvis Mitchell. The curator told The Times recently that he wanted to expand the definition of a film series beyond simple screenings. He has high hopes for Reitman’s live-reading concept. “I think in some way [it] will change the way people look at movies,” Mitchell said. (By Wednesday, the reading was listed as sold out.)

And Reitman? He wants to, well, buy another Saturday. The directo aims to organize script reads from other films, with different casts, at LACMA in the coming months. That is, assuming Thursday’s idea succeeds. “I have no idea if it will work. It just seemed like a really interesting experiment,” he said. “If it doesn’t, I guess we’ll be a one-hit wonder.”

Yes, it’s winding way down here in Toronto. Many of the stars have left town. The hotels are emptier. But big names are still flying in. Alicia Silverstone, Olivia Wilde and Jennifer Garner all converged on the Intercontinental hotel on Tuesday afternoon to promote Butter.

Garner, pregnant with her third child, stars in and produced the quirky film about a butter-carving competition and the ultra-driven woman (Garner) amped up to win it. At this point, she’s been in Toronto so many times, she can apply for dual citizenship. “I was here for my husband last year for The Town. I was here before that for The Invention of Lying,” she says. “I have spent some serious time in Canada, for sure.”

And she’s spending her day in impressively tall Prada heels. Not that Garner is bragging or anything. “I wore the short ones. Rachel Zoe would not be happy. I have some that are two inches taller that I wore last night,” she says. “You go through a training course when you’re in the Screen Actors Guild. They have an obstacle course in platform heels. Everybody you see out there, we’re all in it.”

Her rules for having a good time here:

“Snacks. We have snacks in the car. We have candy in the car.”

“While I’m very good about caffeine, I am also not afraid once or twice a pregnancy to have a half-caf latte. Today is one of those days.”

“Find ways to be as comfortable as possible and just go with it. It’s not an illness, being pregnant. I’m in the easiest part of it.”

Garner’s film has very positive buzz, which makes the actress giddy. “I was so pleased — pleased doesn’t begin to describe — relieved, grateful, surprised, shocked when we got the first big laugh,” she says. And unlike her character, “I’m not that competitive — unless it’s at Scrabble.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Friday it was extending membership invitations to 178 actors, directors, executives and others, including Ellen Page, Anthony Mackie, Russell Brand, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lawrence.

“These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today,” Academy President Tom Sherak said in a statement. “Their talent and creativity have entertained moviegoers around the world, and I welcome each of them to our ranks.”

The group said that its membership policies would have allowed up to 211 new members in 2011 but that several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.

In an unprecedented gesture, documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in Libya in April, was listed among the invitees. Hetherington was an Oscar nominee this year for his film “Restrepo.” The Documentary Branch proposed that his name be included among the 2011 invitees, and the governors agreed.

Little girls may be made of sugar, spice, and everything nice, but that won’t stop them from turning a kitchen into a warzone.

It’s a lesson Jennifer Garner learned firsthand when daughters Violet, 5, and Seraphina, 2, celebrated Easter in their Sunday best last weekend.

“We had them in these sweet Easter dresses. We dyed eggs, they had chocolate, they painted things and they were just a complete and total disaster,” Garner, 39, told PEOPLE Tuesday at the Frigidaire Stain Games in Glendale.

“I thought, ‘Oops! I should have changed them, put on a smock, covered them up.’ That was not the smartest move on my part.”

Fortunately the mom of two daughters with Ben Affleck has a lax philosophy on just how dirty her girls should get. “I would rather them feel free to be messy … Kids should be empowered to be as messy as they want to be,” she explains.

It’s a message Garner holds especially close to her heart as the ambassador of Frigidaire Goes To Bat For Save The Children.

“It’s so important that we remind ourselves to get up and out with our kids and run them around,” she says. “I have to remind myself [too]. Just yesterday, I realized we’d been sitting inside all day on a gorgeous day. I thought, ‘I just have to get outside. Just go and get to the park. Go out in the dirt and muck and be outside and get fresh air and run around.’”

In addition to keeping her girls healthy through physical activity, the actress promotes healthy eating habits by shopping organic at local farmer’s markets, often with Violet and Seraphina in tow.

“The best way to lead is by example, so I like to eat locally grown foods that are organic,” she says. “I think it’s important that they grow up seeing their parents trying at least to take care of themselves.”

Garner, who says she loves the fun atmosphere of farmer’s markets, also encourages her daughters’ love of healthy foods by getting them involved in the shopping process.

“I feel like kids are more likely to eat [fruits and vegetables] if they have a say in what goes into the basket,” she says. “And there’s nothing better than letting them munch on something raw while they’re walking around the farmer’s market.”

In spite of the inherent mess that comes with being a mom, the job is something Garner takes joy in every day. The best part? “Just having these little people in your life to hang out with,” she says.
