The Elephant Project is an organization to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. There is a phrase that says “elephants never forget,” and in the fight against Alzheimer’s, we are striving for those affected to “never forget.” Because of the elephant’s connection to the cause, we have celebrities pose for a photo with an elephant beanie baby, which are then auctioned off with an autograph and a beanie. Tons of celebrities have already joined the cause and we have a bunch of auctions live right now. Jennifer Garner participated in the project a couple of years ago, but we were lucky enough to have her sign another card to be auctioned off with her picture! Her auction is up on eBay right now along with 33 others.

Nelson schools bill gets a push

Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., was hamming it up Wednesday when he appeared at a Capitol Hill event alongside actress Jennifer Garner.

“I know a lot of you have come in here to see ‘Bennifer.’ I’m not the ‘Ben,’” Nelson said as the audience broke into guffaws.

“That was a really bad joke,” Garner told Nelson, although she seemed to be laughing herself.

The tabloid press coined the term “Bennifer” to describe Hollywood supercouple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.

Affleck and Lopez canceled their wedding plans at the last minute. Affleck later married Garner and the couple were dubbed by some as a new “Bennifer.” Affleck was not at Wednesday’s event.

Garner wore a pink dress to the event, while Nelson sported a dark suit and an aquamarine tie dotted with little horses.

Garner, who played a CIA agent on the television series “Alias,” was on the hill to push for passage of the Full Service Community Schools Act of 2009.

Nelson introduced the Senate version of the legislation, which would create a five-year grant program totaling $1 billion to expand the number of full-service community schools across the country.

Those schools go beyond traditional models and provide services to students and their families such as primary, dental and mental health care, career counseling and nutrition education.

They tend to stay open past regular school hours and during weekends.

Proponents say research shows that the enhanced support networks result in improved student attendance, scholastic achievement and parental involvement.

Nelson said that the $1 billion is a lot of money but that it must be compared to the societal cost of children who can’t learn due to hunger, family financial problems or mental health problems.

“It’s an investment,” Nelson said of the funding in the bill.

In addition to rubbing shoulders with a Hollywood star, Nelson was named Wednesday as one of Washington’s top 50 “party animals” by the newspaper Politico.

The publication described Nelson as an “enthusiastically social guy” and a regular at high-profile Washington soirees.

“You can find him grabbing drinks at Capitol Hill joints such as Charlie Palmer Steak or Sonoma wine bar,” according to Politico. “And when he’s not out being a party animal, Nelson is just as social on the Senate floor.”

Nelson said the publication was just having fun with him and that he’s hardly a party animal. He noted that he made his own dinner Tuesday night at home by microwaving a potato and an onion.

“And some cottage cheese,” Nelson added.

Jennifer and Violet take a stroll today in Boston, Massachusetts. The family is temporarily in town while husband/dad Ben Affleck works on his upcoming film. The pair stopped into a local store where Jennifer treated Violet to a “Glitter Flower Girl Sticker Paper Doll.” Later that day Jen picks up Violet from school. Violet enjoyed a Horizon organic chocolate milk on her way home from school.

Jennifer Garner is an award- winning actor and mother. Inspired by the connection children have with their baby blankets. Jennifer created a blanket for the Bundled in Hope campaign featuring overlapping pink circles in various sizes, accentuated by a thick pink satin border.

Jennifer Garner: Not a llama

Jennifer Garner, who along with husband Ben Affleck is one of this weekend’s premier guests at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, arrived to town a few days early so she could stump for her favorite cause: early childhood development.

Garner appeared with her parents, Bill and Pat Garner, and Save the Children Managing Director Mark Shriver at Rosemount Headstart Center in Mount Pleasant Tuesday morning to release the organization’s “State of the World’s Mothers” report.

“The more time I spend with Save the Children, the more time I see America as a whole,” said Garner. Discussing the importance of reading, she said, “Imagine raising your kids without the help of ‘Goodnight Moon’ or ‘Is your Mama a Llama’ or ‘Hands Aren’t for Hitting.’”

She then put her money where her mouth is, reading “Is Your Mama a Llama” to the preschoolers assembled.

Then she headed up to Capitol Hill for a lunch with members and some one-on-one meetings.

Garner also enjoyed the pleasure of introducing her mom for the first time, so she could discuss her experience of being a teacher in West Virginia.

Bill Garner told Yeas & Nays he didn’t think they’d be sticking around for the Correspondents Dinner, but he didn’t seem to mind: He said they had just sailed their boat up to the D.C. area from Marathon Key, Fla.

The 2009 State Of The World’s Mothers Report

Today Jen speaks at a press conference to launch the 2009 State of the World’s Mothers Report at the Rosemount Center. Her mother was there too. Later that day she met with members of Congress before they sat for a luncheon sponsored by Save the Children.

Jennifer Garner to Launch Early Childhood Education Report at D.C. Child Care Center

Actor and Save the Children Artist Ambassador Jennifer Garner, her mother and former school teacher Pat Garner, and Save the Children’s Mark Shriver will launch the 2009 “State of the World’s Mothers” report, which presents alarming findings on the lack of adequate early childhood education across the country and around the world. The report presents a first-ever index that ranks all 50 states and D.C. on their ability to prepare children five and under for success in school.

The Garners and Shriver will explain the meaning and implications of the report’s findings in the United States as well as advocate for an increased federal commitment to American children. Jennifer will also spend time visiting the center and reading to the children.
