I have finally found few pictures of Jen from the red carpet at the Civic Center on her way to the Little Theater and the Charleston Light Opera Guild production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Garner credits the Light Opera Guild for giving her career a boast. She returned to her home state for a benefit to raise money for the guild. As she walks to the Little Theater she smiles at her former George Washington High School counselor.

Jennifer Garner’s latest visit to Charleston was billed as a red-carpet gala but included something far more personal.
She and her actor-husband, Ben Affleck, had their younger daughter christened at the East End church that watched her grow up.
Garner, who was raised in Charleston, visited over the weekend to attend a Saturday night benefit for the theater program that helped her blossom into the actress she is today. (more…)

Jennifer Garner has endeared herself to American audiences in shows like Felicity and Alias, and movies like 13 Going on 30 and Juno. But for the past three and half years, Garner has been working with Save the Children, a non-profit group that works to better the lives of children living in poverty in the U.S. and abroad. Through her work, Garner — mother to daughters Violet and Seraphina — is attempting to address a startling reality: One in four children grow up in poverty in the rural U.S.
After visiting D.C. earlier this month to stump for early childhood education and improved access to child care, Garner made a pit stop in New York to represent Save the Children and link up with Frigidaire in its efforts to teach kids about fresh foods. (more…)
As part of Charleston’s FestivALL, the citywide arts festival, actress Jennifer Garner hosted a red carpet gala benefit for the Charleston Light Opera Guild. Garner, who is a former Light Opera Guild performer, introduced the performance of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” at the Civic Center’s Little Theater. Garner says she is thrilled to help out some of her former co-stars and mentors who are still doing theater in the capital city.
“I’m always happy to be back in Charleston,” Garner said, “especially to be here to support the community I grew up in, which is the Charleston Light Opera Guild. It is so important to go out and support your local theater, see your friends in it and go volunteer, because theater is a big part of the community.” Tickets for the show and reception ranged from $120 to $200 dollars. Garner, who is married to actor Ben Affleck, grew up in Charleston.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Friday it was extending membership invitations to 178 actors, directors, executives and others, including Ellen Page, Anthony Mackie, Russell Brand, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lawrence.
“These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today,” Academy President Tom Sherak said in a statement. “Their talent and creativity have entertained moviegoers around the world, and I welcome each of them to our ranks.”
The group said that its membership policies would have allowed up to 211 new members in 2011 but that several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
In an unprecedented gesture, documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in Libya in April, was listed among the invitees. Hetherington was an Oscar nominee this year for his film “Restrepo.” The Documentary Branch proposed that his name be included among the 2011 invitees, and the governors agreed.

A Hollywood star is giving a local musical production a bit of glamor.
Charleston native Jennifer Garner is helping the Charleston Light Opera Guild raise money at an event Saturday.
“She is a Charleston Light Opera Guild alum who performed with us when she was in high school and it ignited her passion for acting,” said Sallie Daugherty, one of the organizers of the red carpet event.
It’s Garner’s way of saying thanks to her friends at the Guild.
“She wants to give back to the community theater group that helped her get started,” Daugherty said.
The Guild is putting on special production of their current show “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” For $200, you can walk the red carpet and have your picture taken with Garner. You get a VIP seat for the show and attend a reception afterward with Garner as host. For $120, you get a VIP seat at the show and attend the reception.
Daugherty says the money raised will be put towards future productions.
“Each show cost roughly $60,000-$70,000 to produce. So even though we’re an all-volunteer organization with an all-volunteer cast, crew and orchestra, it still costs money to rent costumes and sets and pay the royalties to the publishing companies. It’s just an ongoing need,” she said.
Saturday’s charity event begins at 6:30 with the red carpet at the Charleston Civic Center’s Little Theater. The show starts at 7:30 with a very special introduction.
“Jennifer is going to appear on stage prior to the show and she’ll be talking about what it was like to be a performer in Charleston,” Daugherty said.
The reception follows the performance.
For more information on tickets, call the Charleston Light Opera Guild box office at 304-343-2287.
The event is part of FestivALL 2011.
